Event Security Lessons from Ten Calgary Stampedes

Ten years of Stampede deployment have taught us three things every event security team should re-learn every summer.

Event Security Lessons from Ten Calgary Stampedes
[ 01 ]

Lesson one: planning outpaces manpower

The rookie mistake is over-indexing on headcount and under-indexing on planning. A tiered event operations plan — coordinated with EMS, Calgary Fire, and Calgary Police — is worth two hundred bodies. Bag-check gates, metal-detector lanes, and crowd-flow choke-points must be mapped and rehearsed before the first attendee arrives.

Lesson two: radio discipline is everything

The single most reliable predictor of a well-run event is radio discipline. Concise call-signs. Numbered zones. Standard escalation phrases. Every officer trained to answer within three seconds. When the radio net collapses, the event collapses.

Lesson three: the exit is the event

Attendees notice the entry lines. They remember the exit. Post-event dispersal — coordinated with parking authority, transit, and rideshare — is where the reputation is made or broken. Our post-event asset lock-down sweeps continue for two hours after the last attendee leaves. It's not glamorous work, but it's the reason organizers rebook.
